Reaching Malta

Malta International Airport at Luqa in the centre of the island now has direct connections to most European countries as well as North Africa . British low-cost airlines, in particular, offer some of the cheapest deals in high season. Luqa's arrivals and departures lounges have grown in size in recent years and there is now an ATM, Foreign Exchange Bureau and automated exchange dispenser in the arrivals halls as well as car rental and taxi offices. Various food outlets, book stores and bars are located in the departures hall and main public area. The car-hire collection and drop-off point is in the main long-term car park, five minutes walk from the main airport building.

Visas are required for travel from some countries but those resident in EC member states and US citizens are normally exempt. Contact the local Maltese Embassy or associate consulate for further advice.

There is also a daily high-speed catamaran service from Malta to Catania and Pozallo in Sicily . The car and passenger ferry, operated by Virtu Ferries, has one return sailing during low season and up to three sailings in high season. The journey to Polazzo normally takes around 90 minutes, with Catania three hours away from Valletta .

Transfers to your resort are by taxi, bus or hire car.

Taxis are available 24 hours a day from Malta International Airport . Fixed rates are applicable and fares can be pre-paid at a ticket booth inside the arrivals hall. A typical fare to Valletta will cost 14 Euros, to St Julian's is around 19 Euros and to St Paul 's Bay about 24 Euros. Should you require a taxi to the Gozo ferry terminal at Cirkewwa, it will cost you 30 Euros. These prices are only a guide, it is often less expensive to pre-book a transfer over the Internet.

Buses run every half hour from 6.00am to 9.00pm ( 9.30pm weekends) from outside check-in to the main bus terminal in Valletta . You need bus number 8 for the return journey, which takes around 30 minutes. Bus links to most destinations on Malta are available at Valletta .

Malta International airport is only 8 kilometres away from Valletta and connects with many other European countries. You can also go by ferry from Italy. Public buses are a good way of travelling round Malta and there are regular boat trips between the islands.
